Recently, residents of Edmond made a significant decision by approving an increase in the city's lodging tax. This marks the first adjustment to this tax in three decades, reflecting the community’s willingness to invest in Edmond’s future.

Key Changes to the Lodging Tax

The lodging tax will increase from 4% to 6%, meaning a $100 hotel room stay will now include a $6 tax instead of $4. This adjustment brings Edmond closer in line with rates in neighboring cities while maintaining its competitiveness.

Purpose and Allocation of the Lodging Tax

All taxes collected will be used exclusively to encourage, promote, and foster tourism and conventions in Edmond, as outlined in Ordinance No. 3987. These funds aim to enhance local attractions and events, ensuring the city remains a vibrant destination for visitors.

Economic Impact and Community Benefits

The increased lodging tax is designed to boost Edmond’s revenue by attracting more visitors who will contribute to local businesses through dining, shopping, and recreational activities. This additional income is expected to improve community amenities such as streets, parks, trails, and recreational attractions, fostering a higher quality of life for residents.

Who Pays the Lodging Tax?

The lodging tax applies only to individuals staying overnight in Edmond’s hotels, bed & breakfasts, or vacation homes. Residents will not incur this tax unless they book a stay at these local accommodations.

History of Edmond’s Lodging Tax

This marks the first increase in Edmond’s lodging tax since its introduction in 1994. After three decades at a steady 4%, the adjustment to 6% reflects the city’s commitment to evolving its tourism strategy and maintaining competitiveness with neighboring cities like Norman and Stillwater, which have higher rates.

Supporting Edmond’s Tourism Efforts

The additional revenue will support Visit Edmond, the city’s tourism department, in marketing Edmond as a premier destination. These efforts aim to attract new events and conferences, which are vital for sustained economic growth and community development.

Enhancing Edmond’s Infrastructure and Amenities

Funds from the increased tax will be reinvested into improving Edmond’s infrastructure, including streets, parks, and public amenities. These enhancements will benefit both residents and visitors, ensuring a thriving and welcoming community.
