Mendocino County, California is actively engaging its community to shape the future of short-term rentals (STRs) in its inland regions. Recognizing the significant impact of platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo on local economies, housing availability, and neighborhood dynamics, the county's Department of Planning and Building Services has organized a series of workshops to gather public input.

Why Now?

Currently, Mendocino County has STR regulations in place for its coastal areas and the town of Mendocino. However, the inland regions lack specific guidelines. As STRs continue to grow in popularity, it's essential to establish clear policies that balance the benefits of tourism with the needs of local residents. The county aims to create standards that ensure functional, safe, and attractive communities, aligning with the General Plan and addressing infrastructure, environmental, safety, and economic considerations. citeturn0search1

Workshop Details

The county has scheduled five workshops to discuss the proposed Inland Short-Term Rental Ordinance:

  • Fort Bragg: Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 6 p.m.

  • Anderson Valley: Monday, April 14, 2025, at 6 p.m.

  • Willits: Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 6 p.m.

  • Covelo: Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 3 p.m.

  • Ukiah: Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 6 p.m. (with a virtual participation option)

These sessions will feature presentations on current policies and common concerns, followed by roundtable discussions where attendees can share their perspectives and suggestions.

The Bigger Picture

The rise of STRs has brought both opportunities and challenges to communities worldwide. On one hand, they boost tourism and provide homeowners with additional income. On the other, they can affect housing availability, contribute to neighborhood disruptions, and impact local tax revenues. By proactively seeking community input, Mendocino County is taking a balanced approach to harness the benefits of STRs while mitigating potential downsides.

Stay Informed and Engaged

For those unable to attend the workshops, the county is also collecting feedback through an online survey. More information about the workshops, the proposed ordinance, and avenues for providing input can be found on the county's official website.

Engaging in these discussions ensures that the voices of residents, property owners, and other stakeholders are heard, leading to policies that reflect the community's collective vision for the future of short-term rentals in Mendocino County, California.
